The German who invented the Sauna —
A multi-disciplinary exhibition about the original human interaction with temperature, nature and each other. From November 1st to November 25th 2012, German photographer, researcher and artist Alexander Markus Lembke will be exhibiting a collection of photographs, installations and film interviews about the culture of Finnish Sauna, at Emil Gallery in Tampere.
„Saksalainen, joka keksi saunan“ is Alexander Markus Lembkes search for narratives and scenes, based on his field observations and interviews from different saunas and encounters with their communities throughout the last couple of years. „Saksalainen, joka keksi saunan“ opens November 1, 2012 and will be on display through November 25, 2012.
The sauna roots in the disconnection from everyday sphere and thus the artist would like to transform the exhibition site in a multi-sensual, multilinear and experiential narrative
covering different aspects of the sauna ritual. The exhibition arranges photographs, installations and film interviews of different saunas of the City of Tampere and nearby to follow an explorative approach. Although the Finnish sauna may be very familiar to the Finns, the exhibition aims to newly explore the lively tradition, change and current reality of sauna bathing in four centerpieces. In each of the four parts photographs will be accompanied by general material found at the places Alexander Markus Lembke has visited to add individual attractions incorporating visual, sensible and audible aspects to the exhibition space and to represent specific
distinctions. Originally inspired by the classic volume „The World of Sauna“ by Finnish photographer Cai Bremer and driven by his personal passion for the Finnish sauna Alexander Markus Lembkes commented:
“The Finnish sauna culture is so rich, people might not have been aware of during the last decades”. “Every time when I am visiting a new sauna there is something special something so unique, I had to capture it before it gets lost”
The artist is very happy that Pispalan saunayhdistys ry/ Rajaportin sauna is providing the possibility to continue the Vernissage after the opening in Rajaportin Sauna for an relaxed get together and further discussions about the most important topic of the evening – the Finnish Sauna.
